Brightsight is delighted to announce that we have successfully completed our first payment terminal evaluation under the EU Radio Equipment Directive (RED) regulation. This RED evaluation, conducted on a Newland PCI PTSv6-approved (#4-30504) terminal, delivered RED certification from our partner and EC accredited Notified Body SGS Fimko.
From 1 August 2025, all wireless devices placed on the EU market must comply with the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) cybersecurity requirements. Manufacturers that cannot demonstrate regulatory compliance of their product through self-declaration must obtain certification via a Notified Body before bringing their product to market. In today’s evolving cybersecurity landscape, one of the most frequent challenges the product manufacturers face is the fact that adapting to new regulations and standards adds a lot of extra effort to training staff and creating adequate documentation.
So, how to start a RED certification journey? Or what if your product is already approved by another scheme such as, for example, Payment Card Industry (PCI) PIN Transaction Security (PTS), a payment security standard?
How we support you
As a versatile security evaluation lab, Brightsight leverages its cross-industry expertise and deep understanding of regulatory overlaps to deliver efficient solutions, helping customers achieve multiple compliance goals with a minimal evaluation effort. For smooth and efficient execution of PCI-RED evaluations, our technical experts developed a specification-level mapping between EN 18031, the harmonized standard for RED cybersecurity, and PTSv6.x/7.x requirements.
The successful completion of the Newland’s payment terminal evaluation proves the mapping’s effectiveness and accuracy to demonstrate the RED compliance, with a re-use of the PCI PTS evaluation results. The mapping significantly reduced the evaluation efforts for the RED certification and created a reusable framework for future projects. Being a global player allows our labs to easily exchange knowledge and share local expertise. The cross-laboratory teamwork leads to one evaluation, multiple certifications approach, which makes Brightsight’s services of a unique value.
While Brightsight, as a security lab, validates products’ compliance against specific scheme or standard requirements, the SGS Notified Body issues an EU Type Certificate for RED Articles 3(3) (d), (e) and (f), using the EN 18031 series of standards. Thanks to leveraging on SGS services, our customers benefit from Brightsight’s standout position in delivering a holistic and smooth certification journey.

Tony, Technical Certification Specialist at Newland NPT said: "We truly appreciated the professionalism and deep technical expertise of the Brightsight team throughout the RED certification process. Their ability to streamline the evaluation by aligning it with our existing PCI PTS certification made the journey both efficient and smooth. This collaboration marks another successful milestone in our continued commitment to security and compliance in the global payment ecosystem."
